ANNEAU institutional approach
Our Investment Philosophy
Research gives investment decisions a foundation. Discernment gives evidence context. Governance holds both to the institutional mandate.
Where discipline meets discernment
Evidence informs. Judgement decides.
Markets provide information, but not instructions. We bring macroeconomic, microeconomic, fundamental and technical evidence into one research discipline, then consider that evidence in the context of the institution’s objectives, time horizon, liquidity needs, capacity for risk and governance responsibilities.
Discernment is not a substitute for analysis. It is the disciplined work of interpreting incomplete or conflicting evidence, testing assumptions, distinguishing signal from noise and recognising where a model’s precision may exceed what the underlying facts can support.
Every conclusion remains provisional. Investment views can change as evidence, market conditions or the mandate evolves, and every decision is made in the presence of uncertainty and the possibility of loss.
The two faculties
Structure meets discernment.
Our philosophy combines what can be researched and measured with the human responsibility to interpret, challenge and act within a defined institutional framework.
Make evidence examinable.
Research, data, models and measurement give decisions a common language. They help organise complexity, compare alternatives, expose assumptions and assess risk consistently across the portfolio.
Make uncertainty intelligible.
Experience and collective judgement help interpret circumstances that models cannot fully contain. They support proportionate action when evidence is incomplete, relationships are changing or several plausible paths remain open.
Neither faculty is sufficient alone. Discipline gives investment thinking form; informed judgement gives it direction; governance keeps decisions answerable to the mandate.
Philosophy in practice
Three disciplines around every decision.
The philosophy becomes useful only when it shapes how ideas are developed, challenged, authorised and reviewed.
Research & evidence
Investment ideas are grounded in relevant economic, market, security and portfolio evidence, with sources and assumptions open to scrutiny.
Critical judgement
Specialist perspectives are brought together, contrary evidence is considered and conviction is calibrated to the quality of the evidence.
Governance & review
Decisions remain connected to authority, approved limits, documented reasoning and a review process that can respond as facts change.
A repeatable cadence
Observe. Interpret. Decide. Review.
A consistent cadence supports clear accountability without assuming that markets or institutional needs will remain unchanged.
Observe
Assemble relevant evidence and understand the portfolio’s purpose, exposures and constraints.
Interpret
Challenge assumptions, consider alternative explanations and assess plausible scenarios.
Decide
Take, defer or decline action in proportion to the evidence and within the agreed mandate.
Review
Revisit the thesis, risk parameters and portfolio fit as evidence or circumstances develop.
Asset-class perspectives
Our philosophy across asset classes.
Explore our investment approach across public equities, fixed income and alternatives. The choice of assets remains subject to the institution’s objectives, constraints and agreed mandate.
Public Equities
Public equities are investments in the common stocks of publicly listed companies, locally, regionally and internationally.
Fixed Income
Fixed income includes investments in debt issued by the Mauritian government, other sovereign governments, supranational institutions and corporate issuers.
Alternatives
Alternatives include private equity, infrastructure, energy, real estate and property investments, real estate investment trusts (REITs), commodities and hedge funds.
An institutional conversation
Begin with the mandate.
A useful conversation starts with what the capital must achieve, the risks the institution can bear and the governance responsibilities surrounding every decision.
